Shi Chongyan, surnamed Duan, was a native of Dongping. He went forth from home at Longxing Temple in his home prefecture under Dharma Master Huichao. Wandering abroad in search of the Way, he met Chan Master Shanji of Songyang, who showed him the Dharma of the mind. Later he resided on Mount Duliang, situated on the bank of the Huai, where merchants came from all directions and patched-robed monks followed him like shadows. When Prime Minister Duke Li Shen was pacifying Guangling, he was firm and severe by nature, had little contact with others, and particularly disdained the disciples of Śākya. If he ever permitted an interview, challenges and difficult questions would arise like a forest of spears, and those who could not answer properly were mostly rebuked and driven out. Shen sent the yamen runner Zhang Youcheng to convey his invitation for Yan to enter his mansion. Yan's responses hit upon the underlying principle, his discussions resonant and clear. Shen was bewildered, unexpectedly unable to fathom his depths; he developed special faith and refuge in him, inviting him to reside at Huizhao Temple to guide and transform beings. Responding like voices of the same tone, nearly a thousand people gathered. In the second year of the Kaicheng era, he passed away in the pure courtyard at the age of eighty-four. On the twenty-third day of the tenth month, his whole body was placed in a stupa.
