Śramaṇa Xuance was surnamed Lu, a native of Kuaiji. As a youth, accompanying his father on trading journeys, he attended the Guangming Assembly at Mount Tiantai; it had been instituted by Chan Master Zhiyi of the Sui dynasty, and every ninth month, both monastics and laity gathered in flocks from near and far prefectures and cities. Ce beheld the marvel, and consequently renounced the world (pravrajyā) under Master Zhiguang of Chanlin Temple. Wandering in all directions, he met Daji of Jiangxi, and his obscuring cataracts instantly cleared away. After making inquiries everywhere, he saw the exceptional beauty of Mount Jiujing in Huangpi, whereupon he thatched a cottage for his dwelling; fellow students flocked to him like cicadas toward the light. Someone comforted Ce, asking: 'Can the Master endure loneliness like this?' Ce replied: 'One who has attained the Way has forgotten the mind; my joy is boundless.' In the eighth year of Dazhong, he manifested illness and passed away. Subsequent imperial orders bestowed the posthumous title Grand Master Yuanji ('Perfect Stillness'), and named his stupa Zhijue ('Wisdom Awakening').
