Next is Shi Nanyin of Yuanhe Shengshou Temple in Chengdu Prefecture, surnamed Zhang. His nature was bright and perceptive, and he was insatiable in seeking benefit. He obtained the profound purport of Caoxi, yet had no means to confirm it. He went to see Master Hui of Jingzhong Temple, where he was like brocade freshly off the loom, washed to enhance its splendour, or a candle-bearing dragon moving along to disperse the dark. Nanyin entered Shu from Jiangling, and on the southern bank of the Shu River, he cut the grass and built a thatched hut. The multitude all turned to him in reverence, and it gradually became a Buddhist sanctuary; this was in the early years of Zhenyuan. After Sikong Gao Chongwen pacified Liu Pi, he changed this temple's name to Yuanhe Shengshou; it was originally named Baoying. As Nanyin's conditions for conversion were drawing to a close, he manifested illness and entered extinction in the early years of Changqing. A stūpa was erected and he was buried within the temple. During the Huichang era the stūpa was destroyed, and during the Dazhong era this temple was re-established on the old foundation of Baoying north of the river, reverting to the name "Shengshou". Among Nanyin's disciples who transmitted his lineage was Yimian, who revived the Chan method.
