Shi Yixuan, whose secular surname was Xing, was a native of Nanhua in Caozhou. He practiced and studied across various regions, not shunning hardships. Upon meeting Chan Master Yun of Mount Huangbo, tapping and pecking occurred at the very same instant, and he thoroughly penetrated. He then returned north to his native soil, condescending to comply with the request of the people of Zhao, and took up residence at Linji south of the city. Those who had ceased lecturing on scriptures and treatises all came close to his chamber; he demonstrated the mind-essence to people, in a manner quite similar to Deshan. On the tenth day of the fourth month in the bingxu year, the seventh year of Xiantong, he manifested extinction. By imperial order he was bestowed the posthumous title Great Master Huizhao, and his pagoda was called Chengxu. His spoken teachings circulated widely in the world; today Hengyang is called the Linji Chan school.
