12.32

系曰：雪峯道也恢廓乎！駿奔四海學人。所出門生形色不類，何邪？玄沙乘《楞嚴》而入道，識見天殊，其猶諺曰「青成藍，藍謝青，師何常，在明經。」故有過師之說。一則雪峯自述，塔銘已盡其致也。一則玄沙安立三句，決擇群見，極成洞過歟！今江表多尚斯學，此學虛通，無繫了達，逍遙勿拘，知「乘急」也。雪峯化眾，切乎杜默禪坐，知「戒急」也。其能各捨一緩，以成一全，則可乎！

The appraisal says: How vast was Xuefeng's Way! Galloping toward him came students from the four seas. Why did the disciples who came out from his gate differ in character and appearance? Xuansha entered the Way by way of the Śūraṅgama Sūtra; his insight was immensely different, just as the proverb says: "Green comes from blue, blue yields to green; why should a teacher remain permanent? It lies in comprehending the scriptures." Hence there is the saying that the disciple surpassed the master. On the one hand, Xuefeng's own account and his stūpa inscription have already fully exhausted its import. On the other hand, Xuansha established the three phrases to evaluate various views, which indeed achieved a penetrating surpassing! Today, south of the Yangtze, people mostly esteem this study; this study is open and unobstructed, unfettered and thoroughly discerning, carefree and unconstrained, knowing that "the vehicle is urgent." When Xuefeng taught the assembly, he was intent on silent meditation, knowing that "the precepts are urgent." If each could relinquish what they took lightly to accomplish a complete whole, would that not be well!
