Shi Yuan'an's secular surname was Tan, and he was a native of Linyou in Fengxiang. In his youth, at Huai'en Temple in Qiyang, he left home under his elder-cousin Vinaya Master You. There was no scripture or treatise that he did not thoroughly investigate. He then sought the Way from Cuiwei, and next from Linji, tasting the flavor of the Dharma from each, as if sated from the bowls of the Fragrant Accumulation. Chipping away the ornamentation and returning to simplicity, he was carefree and at ease. Hearing that the Way of Jiashan was flourishing and his virtue supreme, he went to Liyang to inquire into complicated matters, which further increased his clarity and purity. Later he opened Mount Lepu and soon after resided at Suxi; his replies to those seeking instruction were mostly in elegant paired phrases, transmitted throughout the four seas. In the twelfth month of the wuwu year, the first year of Guanghua of Emperor Zhaozong, he passed away at the age of sixty-five, with a dharma age of forty-six. Facing the end, he addressed the assembly with many words of warning and exhortation.
