Shi Cunshou's origins are unknown. His pure exemplary manner and superior model were such that no one could match him even for an instant. Ceasing his study of sūtras and treatises, his courage surpassed his peers. He went to inquire about the vinaya from Chan Master Shishuang and decisively resolved his former doubts. Like an untethered empty boat, he became an uncarved stump among the withered-wood assembly. Later he returned to Puban, where monastics and laypeople alike gave him their allegiance. At that time, Youqian, Prince of Ji, had received his fief as a regional bulwark; being fond of the curious and partial to the extraordinary, whenever he heard of a person's single good quality, he would treat them with generous courtesy. The prince summoned him to the administrative residence, where they discussed the Way and talked of the profound; without realizing it, the prince moved forward on his mat, his reverence and admiration increasing greatly. Subsequently, he made Cunshou his Bodhisattva Precept Master and showered him with frequent offerings. Cunshou ordained some four hundred disciples and about a hundred nuns. In daily life, Shou spoke rarely, but his words invariably benefited beings. Expressions of joy or anger were never seen on his face; beholding him was like looking upon a solitary pine defying the snow. At his death, his age was ninety-three; he sat cross-legged, and after one month, his beard and hair regrew, so he was shaved again and placed in a pagoda. Around the pavilion of the pagoda, a tiger would frequently circumambulate, leaving many paw-prints. By imperial decree, he was posthumously titled Grand Master Zhenji.
