Śramaṇa Xiu was a native of Qi'an. In his childhood, he naturally had the inclination to leave the secular world. After suffering the loss of his parents, he immediately went to the commandery of Shu to pay respects to Vinaya Master Xing; reciting the scriptures was as easy for him as reviewing what he already knew. He also relied on him to advance to full ordination, and indeed penetrated the vinaya, becoming Master Xing's foremost disciple in transmitting the precepts! After four years like this, he entered Chang'an and approached the gate of Vinaya Master Xuan, becoming his resident disciple. Working with diligence and forgetting weariness, he passed sixteen years without leaving his master's presence. He plumbed the depths of various vinaya sections and refined the interpretations of several lineages, taking the First Commentary as his primary foundation, and then headed toward Huangzhou to repay his birthplace. Next he traveled to Anlu, greatly propagating lectures and instructions. His fine reputation was widely heard; princes, governors, and prefects all united to adhere to his correct teachings, and the monastic community all modeled their refined deportment on him. Vinaya Master Zhengu occupied the upper seat; his understanding surpassed that of all other students, his pure name was the most prominent, and all the rest sat behind him. The undertakings Xiu achieved were beyond calculation. At the age of over seventy, he passed away in his own chamber at Shili Temple.
