Śramaṇa Chongye: it is not known where he was from. Initially, together with Daowan of Yiyang, he studied the vinaya in the Dharma assembly of Wengang. In serving with diligence, Chongye sharpened and polished himself without slacking, and among the academy he was esteemed as the foremost. He shared renown with Ke of Zizhou, yet surpassed him in uprightness and fortitude; his fine reputation spread widely, reaching the imperial palace. Emperor Shengzhen, Ruizong, set his mind on walking the Way, and by imperial decree converted his former residence into Anguo Temple. There was an imperial edict ordering Chongye to enter the Chengmian Palace to cultivate spiritual practice, and in a separate hall he conferred the bodhisattva precepts upon the emperor. The donations offered were exceedingly bountiful, but he yielded them all to repair the halls of Bodhi Temple, precisely because he had never hoarded surplus wealth. During the Kaiyuan era, he had a slight illness and instructed his disciples, saying: "My transforming task is exhausted and my span is ended. You must hold firmly like a dyke against a river, and allow no laxity!" Having finished speaking, he passed away in a separate courtyard of the temple where he resided. Chongye was thus the dharma grandson of Nanshan.
