Śramaṇa Dexiu, whose secular surname was Sun, was a man of Fuyang. In his youth he left the dust of the mundane world, early on dwelling in a Buddhist monastery. When he fulfilled the standards of the precepts, he strictly guarded his flotation bladder; not adhering to a single constant master, he set his mind on the storehouse of vinaya. Apart from giving lectures and discussions, he often pitied hungry ghosts and spirits lacking food, and regularly bestowed food and drink upon them late at night. The people along the river of Zhejiang respected and stood in awe of him with utmost sincerity. When he passed away at Mount Ding, numerous miracles occurred; this was in the early years of the Tianbao era. When his spirit-seat was moved into the stūpa, seven relics (śarīra) fell from the sky; his disciples placed them in a vase and sealed them within the stūpa. When someone opened it, they saw relics growing upon Dexiu's teeth, falling down in profusion. Later people stacked bricks to construct a pagoda. The local villagers said: 'A white snake constantly coils and guards the stūpa; children gathering firewood and herding cattle dare not approach it.'
