Śramaṇa Aitong, whose secular surname was Zhao, was originally a man of Tianshui. For generations his family had worn official caps; he was outstanding from his youth, and of his own accord graciously resolved to become a son of the Buddha. After receiving the upasampadā, he lectured on the Mahīśāsaka Vinaya; disciples near and far took him as their master, like creatures of scale and feather flocking to the leviathan and phoenix. Formerly, when Tripiṭaka Master Juéshòu of Jibin of the Southern Song dynasty translated this vinaya, he subsequently extracted one roll of Karman (Jiemo). With the passage of time, that text became fragmented and lost; students seeking it could not find it and had nothing to rely upon. Aitong then excerpted one roll of Karman from within the great vinaya, and students of that school broadly circulated and propagated it, whereupon monastic procedures were finally complete. During the reign of Emperor Xiaohu (Zhongzong), under the Shenlong era (705–707), when large-scale retranslations were conducted, Aitong participated in the translation bureau together with Wengang and others, and was commended as a verifier of meaning. Aitong contributed greatly to the scriptures translated by Yijing. He composed the Wufen lü shu (Commentary on the Mahīśāsaka Vinaya) in ten rolls, and further left instructions for Vinaya Master Xuantong of Ximing Temple to polish and edit it again. Later, when the turmoil of An Lushan and Shi Siming broke out, fires destroyed the temple, and today no copies survive.
