Shi Danfu: it is not known where he was from. By nature he was alert and discerning, his speech was invariably firm and straightforward, he was diligent in teaching, and his observance of the vinaya was refined and upright. The region of Kuaiji was a deep repository of vinaya standards. When Fu delivered guiding recitations, those who followed him were like iron drawn to a lodestone. He originally studied in the Dharma assemblies of Vinaya Master Genwen; Wen was to Shenggong as Yan and Xia were to Confucius, and Fu was thus the intellectual grandson of Gong. Following the orthodox tradition, he initiated lectures and penetrated profound and abstruse doctrines. In Yue, after Tanyi and Xuanyan, few could match their footsteps, yet Fu's reputation and renown surpassed those of his predecessors. At that time, Yunwen was a masterly hand, and the Xiangbu school was widely flourishing; Fu stood between the great vinaya masters, and when he conducted monastic matters, the crowd bowed before him as grass before the wind. At the end of the Xiantong era, disciples such as Zhizhang went forth to lecture and transmit his teachings, and today his Dharma lineage still endures. It is said that he authored Personal Notes, but these have not yet been found. Alas, how regrettable!
