Śramaṇa Jingxiao, secular surname Xu, was a native of Danqiu. Initially, his attending [of lectures] was at the gate of Master Biao. Later, admiring the exegetical collections of Ācārya Shouyan, he propagated them in Danqiu. By nature he was stern and resolute, rarely associating with others. Fastidious and uncompromising in his self-restraint, he often suffered encroachment and oppression, and his physical constitution was frail and weak. Later, accepting an invitation, he went to Mount Dongbai in Jinhua to encourage and instruct beginners. At that time, there was a vinaya master from Jiangxi named Huiyou who had produced an exegetical commentary entitled Guijian lu (Record of the Tortoise Mirror); possessing wide learning and being rather arrogant, he led his disciples to Xiao's temple. It happened to be during the lectures on the 'Chapter on Maintaining and Violating [Precepts]', and [Huiyou] repeatedly praised and admired him. From this time on, his reputation flourished and his renown grew high. Every morning he dripped tea [into an offering cup], and one day it transformed into milk. He authored a twenty-fascicle commentary entitled Jianzheng (Selecting the Correct), meaning that through the power of reflective discernment, he eliminated heterodox theories and selected the correct meanings. King Wusu of the Qian lineage summoned him to his native county of Lin'an and appointed him to take charge of Zhulin Temple. Not long after, in the second year of Tiancheng, [the king] ordered him to go to Beita Temple to preside over the ordination altar. Next, he ordered him to reside at the Southern True Body Pagoda Temple, where he ended [his life]. He was moved and buried in the cove of Mount Daci; because of his originally received master's title, the pagoda was called Qingliang.
