Appraisal: To know the enemy's dispositions requires the aid of a guide; or when entering a territory that must be contested, one avoids the censure of being recorded as "not having the land"; it is also like holding a torch while marching by night, so that it is not like a person entering darkness. We have heard that Xuanyi previously dwelt among the Daoists and was familiar with their original teachings. When he returned to the Śākya clan, he refuted their deluded origins. Without needing four months to test them, he had already accepted the surrender of a whole city! Viewed from this perspective, if perchance there were those who rebelled and resisted, and one said, "I shall speak your truth," does it not refer to this?
