Śramaṇa Zhichang stood out far above his peers; his conduct was pure and frugal. He visited spiritual friends everywhere, accompanied Nanquan like a shadow, and together they frequented the gate of Daji (Mazu Daoyi), thereby comprehending the Way of Jiangxi. During the Yuanhe era, he halted his staff at the pure cloister of Guizong on Mount Lu. His followers gathered like an echo, and his Dharma spread widely. Before long, Bai Letian (Bai Juyi) was demoted to Marshal of Jiangzhou and treated him with the utmost veneration. Subsequently, Vice Director Li Bo, who had lived in seclusion on Mounts Song and Shaoshi in the sixth year of Yuanhe, was summoned to office as an Imperial Collator. Suppressed by Du Yuanying, he was sent out to serve as Prefect of Qianzhou. Within less than a year in Nankang, he was transferred to become Prefect of Jiangzhou. Bo was broadly learned and deeply knowledgeable; of the books of the hundred schools, there were none he had not mastered, so he was called "Li Ten-Thousand-Volumes." Upon arriving in the commandery, he was delighted to meet Bai Letian, and they spoke of how Xunyang and Mount Lu possessed the finest landscapes and of the hermits and sages of the past. Discussing the former traces of Huiyuan, Bai then recounted that Chan Master Guizong was adept at discussing the essentials of Chan. Li said: "Sooner or later, the golden boards of the imperial court will display the name of this vegetable-eating monk!" Bai said: "If that is so, you do not yet know this vegetable-eating monk!" Bai urged him strongly to visit the Two Forests (Donglin and Xilin), intending that they meet Chang together. When they arrived at Guizong, Li asked: "In the teachings, it is said that 'Mount Sumeru contains a mustard seed, and a mustard seed contains Mount Sumeru.' How can a mustard seed contain Mount Sumeru?" Chang said: "People say you, Erudite Scholar, have read ten thousand volumes of books; is that so or not?" Li said: "I am unworthy of this empty reputation." Chang said: "From the soles of your feet to the crown of your head is only a body of a few feet; where do the ten thousand volumes of books go?" Li bowed his head in silence, and upon further reflection, exclaimed in praise. Later, the monk Shenjian of Donglin Temple, who lectured on various sūtras and treatises, asked about "Bodhi before one's eyes." Chang briefly brought it up; Shenjian did not comprehend, and instead filed a petition accusing Chang of manifesting evil realms. At that time, Li's adjudication of the matter was widely reputed to have hit upon the principle. Chang possessed an unusual physical sign: his eyes shone with double pupils. He therefore used medicine to fumigate his hands and constantly rubbed his eyes; before he realized it, the corners of his eyes had turned completely red, and he was known as "Red-Eyed Guizong."
