17.42

系曰：物涉疑似，難輒區分。勁公誌《鑑燈》，若遺物重獲歸家也。後之人必不敢攘物歸家也。故曰「前事不忘，後世之元龜」也。

The appraisal says: When matters involve doubt and ambiguity, they are difficult to distinguish hastily. The Venerable Jin's composition on the Mirror-Lamp was like a lost possession being reclaimed and brought home. Later people will surely not dare to steal possessions and take them home. Therefore it is said: "Not forgetting past events is a guide for later generations."
