17.45

系曰：周武滅佛法。隋開皇辛亥歲，太府丞趙文昌入冥見邕受對，寄語文帝拔救。周世宗澄汰，毀私邑，勒立僧帳，故說大漸招其惡報。或有入冥見之，并贊成厥事者，同居負處，略同周武。未知是乎？

The appraisal says: Emperor Wu of the Northern Zhou destroyed the Buddha Dharma. In the xinhai year of the Kaihuang era of the Sui, Court Director of the Imperial Stud Zhao Changwen entered the netherworld and saw Emperor Wu (Yuwen Yong) receiving retribution, and was asked to relay a message to Emperor Wen to rescue him. Emperor Shizong of the Later Zhou purged the saṅgha, destroyed private temples, and forcefully established monastic registers; thus it is said that in his final illness he incurred evil retribution. Some who entered the netherworld saw him, and those who assisted and praised this affair were in the same burdensome place, much like Emperor Wu of the Zhou. One wonders whether this is indeed so.
