The appraisal states: To travel ten thousand li in a single day—he was certainly no ordinary human. Was he a ghost or spirit? Or did he possess the arts of immortals? In explanation it is said: 'Observing his deeds one knows the man; Wanhui had no deviant conduct, so he was no ghost or spirit; he did not intentionally perform contrived acts, so it was not the art of immortals. He had merely attained "supernatural powers" (abhijñā). Therefore, in the Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra this power has four kinds: first, the body can fly through the air unobstructed like a bird; second, bringing the distant near, arriving without traveling; third, vanishing there and appearing here; fourth, being able to reach [anywhere] in a single thought-moment.' Someone asked: 'Among the four, which did Wanhui possess?' In explanation it is said: 'He possessed them all! Therefore it is called the "supernatural power of wish-fulfillment" (ṛddhi-vidhi-jñāna). The "realm of spiritual power" (ṛddhi-viṣaya) in the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra is the same. It is said that an arhat with great competence can manifest the three spiritual transformations.'
