The appraisal says: According to the records, Fenggan wandered in the capital during the Xiantian era, so we know that Lüqiu, Hanshan, and Shide were all men of Emperor Ruizong's reign. Why then, in Master Daoxuan's Gaoseng zhuan... Lüqiu was a military official of the early Tang. Lüqiu's preface recording the three men does not state their dates, which causes confusion. Moreover, the bestowal of the purple robe with crimson ribbons is a civil qualification. If this is so, there must have been two men named Lüqiu with identical names. Furthermore, the Venerable Dahui You met Hanshanzi during the reign of Emperor Xianzong, who directed him to Letan, and he also encountered Shide at Guoqing; thus we know that these three men were still living in the late Tang. As for Fenggan, he passed away at Tiantai only to appear in the capital; as for Hanshan and Shide, they were present in Xiantian and yet encountered in Yuanhe. Was their lifespan extraordinarily long, or were their appearances and disappearances beyond the ordinary? In the hexagram images of the Book of Changes, it says: "The little fox has almost crossed"; does it not refer to this!
