Shi Xin the Seventh did not make his monastic name known; at that time people called him by his surname and birth order, and since this was familiar to people's ears, there was no other style of address for him; he was truly a native of Shan. When he was a child, he was known for being prudent and solemn, never engaging in frivolous play, mature from an early age. His father was the Governor of Shan Commandery; observing Master Xin the Seventh's conduct, he said to his mother: "This boy is no ordinary child; we must take good care of him." When he was barely ten years of age, he profoundly knew that the Buddha's Dharma was to be revered; whenever he looked at scripture scrolls, he would silently distinguish whether they were Chinese or Sanskrit, without relying on a teacher's instruction at all. When he encountered the bitter grief of losing his parents, the anguish of ascending Mount Qi grew deeper; though relatives exhorted and encouraged him, he became increasingly emaciated with mourning. Earlier, south of the commandery city, there were seven tile kilns. One day, in the midst of his wailing and lamenting, he ran away in a frenzy, and his family servants tracked his footprints to find him. They saw him sitting upright inside the furnace of a kiln, his body radiating a wondrous light, brilliant like gold. The servants were astonished, but when they approached to ask him, he said nothing; fearful, they walked on. Peeking into the next kiln, they again saw Master Xin the Seventh, appearing identical to before. In this manner they visited all seven kilns, and in every single one they saw him sitting upright and emitting light. For this reason, the people of Shan region revered him like a spirit, and whenever they encountered him, they fell to their knees in homage.
