Śramaṇa Huaidao possessed surpassing virtue and lofty sentiments; he was compassionate and forbearing in saving sentient beings, and contemplating the thorough comprehension of the Dharma, he constantly traveled on pilgrimage. Whenever he encountered an accomplished master, he humbled himself with ritual to seek instruction. When he returned to his home region, he was diligent in paying homage to the Buddha; upon picking up his sitting mat (niṣīdana), he obtained a pearl, which he subsequently placed in the center of the forehead of a statue of Mañjuśrī. The pearl was round and lustrous, distinct from the womb of an oyster. Moreover, relic bones were mysteriously precipitated, which were soon divided and placed within the stūpa of Nanjian. In the second year of Zhide, he instructed his disciple Sengchang to uphold the Lotus Sūtra without ceasing day or night. Suddenly, a white cotton kāṣāya fell into the stūpa, no one knew whence it came. This was indeed the resonance of Dao's mind of cultivation with the mysterious truth. Later, Li Yong, the governor of Huatai, composed and calligraphed the inscription for his stele. Successively, Zhiheng came to reside in the Fahua Cloister—he was Huiyi's disciple—and his religious practice was equal to that of his master. After his death, Liu Taizhen, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Rites, composed the stele eulogy, and Chu Changwen calligraphed it. Next were Chaowu and Xingbi, whose reputations were comparable; they transformed the customs of Min, and there was none who did not revere them.
