Shi Devaprajñā—also called Devajñāna—whose Chinese name means ‘Divine Wisdom’, was a native of the Kingdom of Khotan. His learning spanned both the Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna, and his understanding encompassed both the ultimate and conventional truths; in incantations and dhyāna methods, there was nothing he did not know thoroughly. In the first year of the Yongchang era [689], he arrived here and had an audience with the Heavenly Empress in Luoyang. An imperial decree ordered him to proceed to the Eastern Wei State Temple (later renamed the Great Zhou Eastern Temple) to undertake translation work. From the yichou year of that same era to the xinmao year, the second year of the Tianshou era [689–691], he brought out six works in seven fascicles, including the Avataṃsaka-sūtra and the Dharmadhātv-aviśeṣa-śāstra. The śramaṇa Chuyi served as scribe, the śramaṇa Fuli composed the text, and the śramaṇas Degan, Huiyan, Faming, and Hengjing verified the meaning. Where or in what year Prajñā died could not be ascertained.
