At that time, Śubhakara traveled throughout the great wilderness, everywhere paying homage to holy sites, undeterred by hardship and peril. Everywhere he set foot, he visited three times. He also entered Mount Kukkuṭapāda, shaved the head of Kāśyapa, and received the laying on of hands on his crown from Avalokiteśvara. Once he spent the summer retreat on Gṛdhrakūṭa; a wild beast guided him forward, leading him deep into a mountain cave. The cave was as bright as day, and he saw an image of Śākyamuni, with attendants on left and right looking lifelike. At that time, Central India suffered a great drought, and they asked Śubhakara to pray for rain. Suddenly Avalokiteśvara was seen in the disc of the sun, holding a kuṇḍikā vase in hand and pouring water upon the earth. The assembly at that time rejoiced and felt resonance, obtaining what they had never experienced before. Furthermore, he forged gold like palm leaves and copied the Great Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra. He melted gold to make a stupa equal in measure to the Buddha's body. Because Śubhakara had been traveling abroad for a long time, his mother thought he had already died; weeping morning and evening, she lost her sight, but when a letter arrived inquiring after her wellbeing, her eyes became clear as before.
