Śramaṇa Yuanzhen, surnamed Chen, was a native of Zhongshan. In his youth, he was perceptive and fond of study; he entered the school and investigated the Five Classics. Suddenly he met an itinerant śramaṇa lodging for the night; his father, who was an official in the prefectural yamen and deeply inclined toward the Way, retained the monk to make offerings to him. Zhen reverently served this monk and listened to his discourses on the Way, finding them exceedingly inspiring. He set aside the Confucian classics, opened Buddhist scriptures, abruptly bade farewell to those he loved, and went to Mount Baici to take Zhiyou as his master and receive instruction. Later, he encountered the Chan Master of Heze, obtained the Dharma, and secluded himself on Mount Wuya in Nanyang. Prior to this, the mountain had harbored many giant serpents, and the marsh caverns held poisonous dragons, which troubled the local villagers. When Zhen came to reside here, both creatures hid their traces. Once, a person of extraordinary attire and appearance came, bowed, and said: "I have been here for two hundred years. Now, moved by your unintentional transformation and your cultivation free of deliberation, our kind has received an unseen response and ascended beyond; could this be due to anything other than the Master's power?" He passed away in the sixth year of the Zhenyuan era, enjoying an age of eighty-six. His disciples enshrined his whole body in a stupa.
