Śramaṇa Huaikong, whose surname was Liang, was a native of Langzhou. In his youth he went to Guangfu Cloister on Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa in his home prefecture to shave his head and dye his garments. After receiving the precepts, he traveled through various regions out of admiration for learning, attaining a clear and fluent comprehension of Chan Master Daji's teachings. Later he went to Mount Anfeng in Pengcheng, where he hung his staff and sat in silent meditation. Within a few years, it grew into a great monastery. Once, a monk arrived flying through the air, circling the perimeter walls without ceasing. At times he stepped on lotus flowers, at times walked upon the ground; everyone beheld him. After several days, he bowed and took his leave of Huaikong, saying: "I will return in three to five years to rely upon you." Having spoken, he vanished. Huaikong passed away in the first year of the Xingyuan era at the age of eighty-eight. It was only in the second month of the first year of the Changqing era that he was relocated into a stūpa.
