Shi Daohang, surnamed Mei, was a native of Kuaiji. His father was an administrative clerk in Yuezhou. Hang was literate from an early age, and by the time he came of age he had become an accomplished talent. There was a monk begging for alms; Hang received him and spoke of the Way, showing considerable refinement in dhyāna contemplation, whereupon he sought pravrajyā. He went to Zhiyou of Baoshou Cloister on Mount Siming, received his instruction, and made progress in his cultivation, gathering firewood and drawing water. Later he traveled to Nanyue, and hearing of the spiritual transformation wrought by the Great Master Daji in Jiangxi, he went to attach himself to him. Yearning to nurture the sacred embryo, he saw the marvelous wonders of Luofu: three thousand zhang high, with seventy stone chambers and seventy-two long streams. Immortals, miraculous birds, jade trees, and vermilion herbs grew upon it, and it entered halfway into the sea. Hang dwelt in a stone chamber, resting in dhyāna in silent stillness. Yet mountain spirits and water monsters frequently shrieked in alarm; Hang looked upon them with disdain. An old man, handsome and dignified in appearance, with resplendent robe and cap, bowed twice, touched his forehead to the ground, and said, 'I have dwelled herein for nearly two hundred years. Now, owing to the Master's presence, through a profound resonance not of my own power, I am roaming free and released from suffering, returning to the human realm to experience pleasure.' Most of his resonances with beings were of this sort. In the ninth year of Baoli he died of illness at the age of ninety-five. On the eighteenth day of the ninth month of that year, he was enshrined in a stupa.
