The appraisal says: Is the sound of 'xie' the shang tone or the yu tone? The explanation says: In the compiler's gathering of records, there are two precedents: first, following the written text without indicating the pronunciation; second, receiving it orally and knowing the rhyme. Now that we have 'xie', it follows the written text. If it is the trailing sound of the Songs of Chu, it has the fanqie pronunciation su-ge; if it is the Shandong term for 'few', it has the fanqie pronunciation xie-xie. Since this master's affairs took place in Jingchu, either of the two pronunciations may be accepted as instruction; the name 'Xie' is like birds and beasts calling their own names.
