The śramaṇa Xiyun was a native of Min. When he reached school age, the local village school praised his wisdom and sharpness. He then severed affection and went to Huangbo Mountain Temple in Gao'an to leave the household. When he grew up, his height was only about one chi less than that of Wang Shang; a fleshy prominence rose on his forehead, which people called a 'flesh pearl.' He was untrammeled and unconventional, beyond the measure of ordinary people. When he traveled to observe Mount Tiantai, he chanced upon a monk traveling with him, who talked and laughed casually. Yun secretly glanced at him and saw that his eyes flashed from time to time, brilliantly piercing. As they walked side by side, a huge mountain stream cut across the path, its waters surging and overflowing; thereupon they laid aside their bamboo hats and rested on their staffs, halting. That monk urged Yun to cross over, and Yun retorted forcefully to stir him up, saying: 'If you wish to cross, Master, cross yourself.' When he had spoken, the monk lifted his robes and trod upon the waves as if walking on dry land, not wet at all, and reached the other bank. Turning around, he waved his hand and said: 'Cross over!' Yun pointed with his fingers like halberds and scolded him, saying: 'Bah! You self-liberated fellow! Had I known earlier, I would have broken your shins!' The monk sighed and said: 'You are truly a vessel of the Mahāyāna Dharma, beyond my reach. Even if you were able to harm me, you would only bring shame upon yourself.' A moment later, he vanished. Yun felt bewildered and at a loss. Later, when traveling lightly to the capital to beg for alms, he arrived at the gate of a certain household. Behind a screen wall, he heard an old woman say: 'Are you not overly insatiable?' Yun said: 'The host has not yet troubled the guest; how can there be insatiability?' The old woman invited him inside and served him food. The old woman said: 'Although I have a body of five hindrances, I had the honor of paying homage to National Master Huizhong in the past. I urge you, Master, to go and seek the Chan Master of Mount Baizhang; what a pity that one so magnificent and grand, a true vessel of the Mahāyāna, should wander aimlessly.' Yun reflected that he had encountered two instructions and their prophecies were the same, so he returned to Hongjing to see Chan Master Hai (Baizhang Huaihai), who opened his mind's aim; his reputation rose even higher. In compliance with an invitation, he resided at the Huangbo Hermitage. The prime minister of Shengping, Pei Xiu, deeply revered him and paid a visit in person, presenting him with a poem: 'He once received the mind-seal of the realized master; / with a round pearl on his forehead and a body seven chi tall. / For ten years he hung his staff and dwelt along the waters of Shu; / today, floating his bowl, he crosses the shores of the Zhang. / A thousand dragons and elephants follow his lofty steps; / ten thousand li of fragrant flowers forge sublime causes. / I wish to serve you, Master, as a disciple; / to whom will you transmit the Dharma?' Thus Prime Minister Pei attained the Dharma from Yun's school. In the middle of the Dazhong era, he passed away at the temple where he resided. He was posthumously granted the imperial title Chan Master Duanji, his stupa was named Guangye, and his recorded sayings circulate in the world.
