Shi Fajiang was a native of Jiangdong. He came to travel in Min and Shu, and lived at Faju Temple—which was built by Prince Xiu of Shu during the Sui dynasty. Inside the temple was a śarīra stupa erected by Emperor Wen during the Renshou era. Jiang took compassionate pity as his core concern; he often foresaw things before they arrived, and his words were never mistaken in the slightest. Once, inside his room, he said to his disciples, "Outside there are more than ten thousand people, all wearing caps and curled up, begging me for salvation. Go outside the temple quickly and look for them." Seeing neither people nor things, the disciples wondered why their master's words were so disordered. While they were hesitating, several tens of people arrived carrying snail shells in bamboo baskets on shoulder poles. Jiang said, "This is it!" He ordered money to be fetched to ransom them, and cast them into the water.
