Shi Qici's family and clan are unknown; some say he was a man of Siming. His bodily form was plump and flabby, with a furrowed brow and a protruding belly. His speech was erratic, and he slept wherever he happened to be. He regularly carried a cloth bag on a staff and entered markets and shops; seeing something, he would beg for it, down to vinegar, sauces, fish, and salted fish. The moment it touched his mouth, he would put a little into his bag, and he was known as the "Cloth Bag Master of Changtingzi." He once lay in the snow, yet there was no snow upon his body; people marveled at him for this. He had a verse that ran, "Maitreya, true Maitreya, / contemporary people do not recognize him," among other lines; people said he was a manifestation trace of the Compassionate One. He also stood upon a large bridge, and someone asked, "What are you doing here, Master?" He replied, "I am searching for someone here." Whenever he begged for food and drink from someone, that shop's goods would sell out. Inside his cloth bag were always the "hundred and one" implements that sustain the body. When indicating good or ill fortune to people, he unfailingly displayed omens by his appearances: during droughts, he would drag high-toothed wooden clogs and sleep with raised knees on a market bridge; when it flooded, he would tie on wet straw sandals. People came to know through this verification. In the Tianfu era, he died in Fengchuan, and the villagers buried him together. Later, in another prefecture, this gentleman was seen again, still walking and carrying his cloth bag. Between Jiangnan and Zhejiang, many painted his portrait.
