Shi Daoyi was a native of Quzhou in Jiangdong. During the Kaiyuan era, he came to Mount Wutai and resided in the Congee Cloister of Qingliang Temple. When the director of meals made a general call to transport firewood, [Daoyi], having to carry heavy loads and climb high, showed considerable reluctance. Yi traded a pair of bamboo shoes to another person to take over the burden. He then put on his three-piece patched robe and walked northeast for about five li. Beneath Mount Laṅkā, he met an old monk of archaic and humble appearance, leading an acolyte named Jueyi. The old monk walked ahead, and the acolyte called and invited Yi to go inside the temple to the east to drink tea. He then accompanied them into the temple and paid homage throughout the various cloisters. He saw a great pavilion of three stories, nine bays in total from top to bottom, entirely gold in color and dazzling to his eyes. The old monk instructed Yi to return quickly to where he was staying, as the mountain was cold and difficult to dwell in. Assenting, [Yi] took leave and exited the temple; having walked barely a hundred paces, he looked back and saw only mountains and forests, realizing then that it had been a manifested temple. He subsequently returned to Chang'an. In the first year of the Dali era, he reported the circumstances of this matter in a memorial to Emperor Baoying Yuansheng Wenwu. An imperial edict was received ordering the establishment of Jinge Temple, and an order was issued to ten regional commanders to contribute donations. Thereupon, a master builder was summoned, a monk named Cunda, to measure the masonry and carpentry and construct the single temple of Jinge. Cunda had originally been a monk of the Magpie Cloister at Nālandā Temple in the Western Regions. After the temple was completed, an imperial edict conferred upon Amoghavajra the title of “Tripiṭaka”. It is not known how Yi ended his life.
