The appraisal states: Why did the two masters, Xiu and Huo, make no opportunistic attempt to avoid disaster when facing death? The explanation is: "What is a difficulty to ordinary people is easy for a bodhisattva. Having abandoned this body over successive lifetimes, why should they cling to it? Long ago, An Shigao repeatedly repaid his debts, departing as casually as brushing away dust. As soon as the karmic burden lightens, the body that supports suffering is exhausted, exchanged for a firm and indestructible body. When Daoist immortals perish by the blade, it is called liberation by the sword (jianjie); how much more so for those who correctly cultivate and realize the fruits of the Dharma? Viewing the nature of conditioned arising, they do not consider an untimely end to be a disgrace."
