23.36

系曰：昔薄拘羅有五不死，今通公二不死；昔法充投千仞香爐峯而不亡，通且同矣。得非天龍負翼不損一毛乎？而能延彼連持色心未斷者何？俾其增修淨土業耳。

The appraisal says: Of old, Vakkula had five instances of not dying, and now Master Tong had two instances of not dying; of old, Fachong cast himself down the thousand-fathom Xianglu Peak without perishing, and Tong was similar to him. Could it be anything other than the devas and dragons bearing him up so that not a single hair was harmed? And what allowed the prolongation of his body and mind, which remained connected and unsevered? It was simply to enable him to increase and cultivate his karma for the Pure Land!
