Śramaṇa Shouxian, secular surname Qiu, was a native of Yongchun in Quanzhou. In his youth he was intelligent and penetrating, profound, dignified, and composed; he vowed to go to Jixiang Cloister to follow a teacher and shave his hair. Later he traveled to study at the bodhimaṇḍa of Chan Master Yunmen, where he clearly understood the decision of the mind. Hastening to Hengyang, he was urged by the assembly to preach the Dharma; wearers of patched robes and practitioners of asceticism gathered like the hundred rivers converging upon the morning-and-evening sea. Xian did not wear silk or floss, but only cloth garments and leather trousers. Through midsummer and midwinter he never altered them; his flanks never touched the mat, and he sat solely on a rattan couch, closing his eyes throughout the night. Except when there were questioners, whom he inspired according to their needs, he maintained himself with calm dignity. During the Qiande era, he told the assembly: 'I have a debt and a vow unfulfilled; my mind is not yet settled.' The next day, he entered Mount Nanyao and threw his body down to feed tigers. When his disciples went to search for him, they saw only his two shins, wrapped in his leather trousers, still remaining. They gathered them and cremated them, obtaining countless śarīras. His retribution age was seventy-four. A small pagoda now houses his remains.
