The appraisal says: The Hīnayāna teachings consider suicide a grave transgression of the precepts, and the preliminary expedient means also incur guilt; for this reason no one dared hold a torch to embrace the fire. However, there are two cases of suicide: the first is out of fear, which necessarily incurs the offenses of thullaccaya and dukkaṭa. The second is out of a vow for rebirth in a pure land, where with a fierce and valiant mind, when life ends the body departs; how could thullaccaya and dukkaṭa pose an obstruction? Furthermore, once the great mind is aroused, a lamp can dispel a hundred years of darkness in a room; what offense could there be? Therefore, how could practitioners bind those of great capacity with the lesser way?
