Someone might say: 'When good men perform self-burning and searing, no one doubts it. But there are bad men accustomed to slicing and cutting, who treat pain as a jest; capable of enduring dismemberment, they regard scorching and roasting as mere play. Some do it occasionally in imitation of others, or force themselves to do it to deceive the world. What good roots does this plant, other than courting sharp stings?' I reply: Although obstinate people may delight in endurance, and wicked ruffians may withstand injury, if they burn themselves with scripture-recitation, or feed [creatures] even with shallow sincerity, they invisibly elicit good retribution and have already planted a good cause. With a superficial mind, one obtains a superficial retribution. In the past, a woman playfully put on a kāṣāya, and a drunken brahmin donned Dharma robes; when their conditions converged, they ultimately attained the fruit of the Way.'
