Shi Minghui, whose origins are unknown. He was reserved, silent, and deferential, possessing restrained resolve and purified clarity; enduring cold and hunger, he vowed to seek the Mahāyāna. Clad in the armor of vigor, the demon of sleep retreated; thus he intoned scriptures and practiced walking meditation during the early, middle, and late night watches. At the time, Tripiṭaka Master Xuanzang had completed the translation of the Mahāprajñāpāramitā-sūtra at Yuhua Palace in the Northern Ward of the capital region, and manifested his demise in the first year of Linde. That night at the zi hour, as Hui was circumambulating the Buddha hall, he suddenly saw four white rainbows in the north stretching from north to south, spanning across the Well constellation and penetrating straight through the Cien Pagoda compound, distinct and clear. Hui wondered at this in his heart, thinking to himself: 'Formerly when the Tathāgata entered extinction, twelve white rainbows pierced through the Supreme Subtlety enclosure from the west, whereupon the extinction at the Twin Trees occurred. Now that this sign has appeared, could Master Yuhua have met with impermanence?' When morning came, he recounted what he had seen to the assembly, and all marveled at it. On the ninth day, the mournful report arrived in the capital, matching exactly what he had seen. Hui became even more earnest and diligent, remaining unflagging in old age. Where he ended his life is unknown.
