Shi Huijing, surnamed Zhang, was a native of Qi. When young he was perceptive and bright, able to speak while still in swaddling clothes; his parents nurtured him with love, and the neighbors called him a wondrous child. It coincided with the newly translated Great Cloud Sūtra (Mahāmegha-sūtra), which contained a prophecy regarding a female sovereign; the Empress Dowager [Wu Zetian], deeply moved by this holy prophecy, held the scripture in highest esteem. Jing was only three years old when someone taught him to recite it completely, his articulation melodious and expressive, its manner natural. This eventually reached the imperial palace, and an imperial decree summoned him to chant it. The Sovereign was greatly pleased, patted his head, and by decree bestowed upon him a set of purple kāṣāya robes; later, on this account, he renounced secular life. His bearing was upright and resolute, and he remained steadfast in the rules of discipline, serving as the prior (sthavira) of his home temple. Rescuing and restoring the fallen monastic rules, he was feared by all. Whenever he saw monks or nuns behaving inappropriately on the streets or incurring even slight ridicule, he would certainly propose punishment without leniency. Later, he practiced meditation, and 'his empty room produced white light.' At the time of his death, he was over eighty years old. At the Harītī (Mother of Nine Sons) Cloister, his portrait and the bestowed purple robe still survive.
