Śramaṇa Chongzheng, whose secular surname was Hou, was a native of this prefecture [Taiyuan]. He was sharp and perceptive from a tender age and firmly desired to enter monastic life. He could recite more than a thousand sheets of scripture from memory. Senior elders praised him, calling him a library of the scriptures. His spirit was profound and restrained, his appearance neat and handsome; with elegant eyebrows and wide eyes, his lofty ambition was extraordinary. Although he was well versed in various texts, that in which he was most proficient was the Abhidharmakośa-śāstra. Chancellor Duke Wang Jin personally invited Zheng to lecture on it. At that time, when he spoke, brilliance blossomed and lovely melodies flowed forth; those who listened never grew weary, and though hours and sun-shadows shifted, they felt as if only the time of a single meal had passed. His analytical discernment was particularly outstanding, unmatched by anyone. Emperor Daizong issued an imperial edict summoning him to be a Great Worthy at Zhangxin Temple, but he pleaded illness and did not go. He passed away in his own cloister at the age of fifty-eight.
