24.18

系曰：誦經不貴多，要在神解。慧警三歲通《大雲經》，差為奇俊。崇政終通千紙，得力在乎不奉詔赴章信新寺。睿公諷徹《十輪》，後咨禪道，故經偈云：「雖誦千章，不如一句」者，如渡溪杖策，到岸必捨焉。

The appraisal says: In reciting scriptures, quantity is not what is valued; the key lies in spiritual understanding. That Huijing at the age of three could master the Dayun jing was indeed extraordinary. That Chongzheng eventually mastered a thousand sheets gained its power when he did not comply with the edict to proceed to the new Zhangxin Temple. Master Sirui recited the Daśacakra-sūtra completely and later inquired into the Way of dhyāna. Thus the scripture verse says: 'Though one recites a thousand verses, it is not as good as a single line.' It is like crossing a stream with a staff: upon reaching the shore, one must cast it aside.
