Dharma Master Sandao was originally surnamed Cao and was a native of Luling. By his natural disposition, he delighted in vegetarian food. Reaching the age of youth with hair tied in tufts, he aspired to leave the household life. At that time, across the region west of the Yangtze River, in the wake of the An Lushan-Shi Siming Rebellion, the south was not at peace, with much local usurpation; thus the strong annexed the weak, and warfare did not cease. In the eleventh month of the seventh year of Dali, Grand Master Lü of Guangzhou had his city overturned by rebellion. An official dispatch was received from Lu Sigong of Hongzhou ordering the Prefect of Jizhou, Liu Ning, to conscript three thousand troops to recover Panyu together.
