Śramaṇa Daguang, whose secular surname was Tang, was born in Anji of that county. When his mother, Lady Mei, became pregnant, she had a dream corresponding to miraculous portents; during gestation she loathed the stench of meat and alliums. Once born, as soon as he could speak, he did not engage in playful trifles. Before losing his milk teeth, he yearned to seek the Buddha-vehicle and vowed to recite the Lotus Sūtra. Within three months he had mastered it; as soon as his voice chanting the sūtra rang out, the coarse and vulgar changed their ways. When he eventually renounced household life, he soon received the precepts, traveled west to the capital, and had an audience with Emperor Suzong. The emperor summoned him for an audience in the inner palace, clasped his hands, and sighed, saying: "Formerly I dreamed of a monk from Wu, chanting the Mahāyāna with his mouth, accompanied by the emission of five-coloured lights; his voice and countenance were just like this, truly answering my prayer!" He thereby bestowed upon him the name Daguang ('Great Light').
