Śramaṇa Zhideng: it is not known where he was from. He was solemn in his own conduct and strict at all times, guarding the rules of the precepts and constantly reciting the Diamond Sūtra, untiring in his diligence. During the Zhenyuan era, he fell ill and died. When his disciples felt his hands, they were still warm, so they did not immediately place him in a coffin. After seven days he revived, saying: "At first I saw in the underworld someone like a king, who, because I recited the sūtra, joined his palms, descended the steps, and made inquiries, saying: 'The Venerable shall be granted another ten years in the world; strive to escape birth and death.' He then asked: 'When the monks in the human realm eat Job's tears seeds after noon as medicinal food, is this permissible or not?' I replied: 'This greatly contravenes the original teaching.' Deng then reported: 'What about the rules in the Vinaya regarding proper and improper allowances and prohibitions?' The king said: 'These were added by later people; they are not the Buddha's intention.'" When people near and far heard this, among the monks of Zhugong there were even those who would not drink water after noon.
