Shi Huiwu, whose family clan is unknown. He dwelt in seclusion on Mount Taibai, intoning and reciting the Avataṃsaka-sūtra and ingesting pine and atractylodes. Suddenly, at one time, he saw a layman come to invite him. The layman leaped into the sky, had Wu sit in the lapel of his robe, and flew away holding him. Upon arriving at a daoist sanctuary, he saw five hundred extraordinary monks soaring through the sky to arrive. Wu quickly took a seat at the very end of the row. The layman said to him: 'Master, upholding the Avataṃsaka is the realm of the Buddhas; how could you sit below lesser sages?' He then led him to sit above the five hundred. After the feast concluded, the layman said: 'The original intention of the feast was for the Master alone; although five hundred arhats came to eat, they were all merely invited for the occasion.' When the feast was over, he sent him back to his original place, as if waking from a dream. This was during the Yonghui era of Gaozong.
