The appraisal says: Those who pierce lacquer trees always worry that they will drip too little—because they love it, it is hard to obtain; those who chop down the asafoetida tree worry that it has too much pungency—because they hate it, it is easy to find. Alas! That your parasol trees sweated was rare in the world; yet when Master Su scolded them, they left no trace the following year. How could disciples who have left home be inferior to insensate trees? Since they cannot act like lacquer to insulate things from defilement, can they not act like asafoetida to add flavour to food? If they accept the rebukes of masters and friends, they will make themselves complete and pure. The tradition says: 'When you make a fault, do not fear to correct it.' Our own teaching says that if one repents of transgressions, one becomes pure, no different from the original state. Reflect upon this!
