Śramaṇa Wenzhao, no one knows where he was from. He was originally a simple, rustic, and hesitant speaker, yet whenever he saw an image of the Buddha he was filled with joy. One day he went to Baiti Temple, paid homage before the painted likeness of Dharma Master Tanyan, and left home. Devoting himself to chanting the various scriptures, he did not understand their meanings and explanations, and was constantly indignant at his naturally muddled disposition. Suddenly, as if dozing, he saw Dharma Master Tanyan, ten feet tall, his eyes radiating light in all directions, who said to Zhao: 'How could I bestow what you desire? I have a scroll of the Scripture of Intelligence; seek it there and be sure to uphold it with care, and obtaining supernatural responses will be as easy as picking up mustard seeds from the ground!' He then produced it from his sleeve and handed it to him; it was the Diamond Prajñā. Zhao immediately took it and read it; after seven readings he awoke with a start, the scripture still before his eyes. Thereafter he recited it fluently without impediment, as if he had practiced it long. The modulations, rises, and falls of his throat and tongue instantly adjusted into rhythmic meter, unlike ordinary tunes. From then on, his intelligence became daily renewed and eloquence was ever on his lips; at the time people said that Avalokiteśvara had attached himself to his person. Moreover, he said: 'My master was the State Preceptor of the Zhou and Sui dynasties. Whenever he compiled commentaries and subcommentaries, he was always divinely instructed through dreams; I am not ashamed to be his disciple.'
