Śramaṇa Fazhao's origin is unknown. In conduct he was mostly rash and reckless, and his wandering was without constancy. In the first year of the Changqing era, he entered an inn to shelter from the rain. In a short while, the rain worsened and the ground grew muddy; noon passed, and he had failed to obtain food by begging. Thereupon he scolded a boy and sent him to buy pork, boiled it, and stuffed it into several pieces of sesame flatbread. He ate up the coarse food almost entirely, with neither shame nor remorse, behaving as if no one else were present. The guests all cursed and reviled him, and among the youths were some who wished to beat him. Fazhao did not answer at all. When night came, he recited the Diamond Sūtra. Though there were originally neither grease lamps nor candles, the whole room became brilliantly lit, filled with an extraordinary fragrance. All twenty-one guests came to bow, apologize, and offer clothing and goods. Fazhao sat cross-legged as though he saw nothing. His end was not known afterward.
