His name is lost. During the Changqing era he arrived from afar, rough and violent in bearing. Seeing a pure man (an attendant) in the temple, he shouted, 'Take my money and buy wine for me!' When the monks of the temple saw this, they were infuriated that he paid no heed to the vinaya restraints and disgraced their monastery, wondering how they could endure it. They snatched his jug and smashed it against a cypress tree outside the temple; the jug shattered with a clatter, but the wine coagulated and did not flow, clinging to the tree like green jade; shaking it could not scatter it, and smelling it yielded no odor. Astonished and bewildered, the temple monks turned to the visitor and asked, 'What is this?' The visitor replied, 'I constantly uphold the Vajracchedikā-prajñāpāramitā, and I must drink a cup of this beforehand, so that my chanting may be clear and resonant; this has become my regular practice, and it cannot be done otherwise. Venerable sirs, do not take offense.' The temple monks hesitated, looking chagrined. The visitor brought a vessel to the tree to catch it, and the wine fell completely into the vessel without a drop left behind—onlookers stood packed like a wall. Suddenly he swallowed it down, and in an instant the vessel was empty and he was merry and content. It is unknown where this monk went to and from afterward.
