Śramaṇa Congshen: his clan lineage is unknown. In his youth he entered Chanzhi Temple in Jiangdu, renounced the household, and recited scriptures of several tens of thousands of words. That temple was the former palace of Emperor Yang of the Sui. In the fifth year of the Xiantong era, he received full ordination at Fenghufu Temple on the Yantai. At vinaya assemblies and scriptural seats, he sampled and became versed in all of them. Later he merged the three robes into a five-patch robe, and toured all famous mountains and scenic spots without exception. In his later years he returned to the Huai region, where he was elected as the leader of the saṅgha. For five or six years, everything was maintained strictly. Yet he constantly recited the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa-sūtra, never missing a daily count. On the eighteenth day of the third month of the second year of the Zhenming era, he contracted an illness; by mid-morning on the nineteenth day, his breath grew faint and he passed away, his facial expression remaining as usual. After his cremation, thirty relics were obtained, which were hard and bright, without loss even when forged through fire. Stones were piled to make his tomb, and Śramaṇa Linghu of Junyuan composed the tomb inscription.
