Shi Wenzan, surnamed Zhang, was a native of Jinyang. By natural endowment dignified and respectful, in his youth he served his master at Chongfu Temple in Bingzhou. His learning encompassed the multitude of texts, and he brought together the Three Vehicles. As for records in gold tablets and silver cords, or writings of dragon secret and elephant mystery, there was none in which he did not plow and weed the field of feeling, surge forth upon the ocean of speech, proclaim the imperial transformation, and extol the celestial blessings, so that everyone was delighted and convinced. By imperial decree he was appointed a translator, and served as a Grand Worthy of Foshouji Temple in Henan, as well as of Anguo, He'en, and Chongfu Temples in the Capital Region. He was fond of cultivating matters of blessing, and held one hundred unhindered assemblies, making equal offerings to both ordinary mortals and sages alike. Even if wind and clouds rose in succession, when the day of the vegetarian feast arrived, the skies were always bright, clear, and serene; his resonance moved humans and spirits, and his cultivating of blessings was never in vain. He was over sixty years of age when he passed away in his own courtyard. Within the region, a bitter mist seemed to weep, not clearing for several days.
